New London, Meet Your City Captain Pinky

Jul 18, 2023

What started your yoga journey?

My yoga journey began when I experienced an injury acquired through teaching dance fitness. I needed a low impact exercise to heal, and yoga provided that for me.

How long have you been practicing yoga?

I have been practicing yoga for a total of seven years. The past three years have been with Yoga In Our City, where I have led as the New London City Captain and teach classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Green Harbor Park at 5:30pm. My real name is Priscilla but my students know me as Pinky!

How do you think Yoga In Our City benefits the New London community?

The New London community benefits from the modality that Yoga In our City offers, as yoga is something that is healing, transformative, and enriching for its community. The ability to participate in no cost, inclusive yoga at public parks brings out people who would otherwise stay indoors. Also, we were able to add Mondays at Ocean Beach Park to the New London schedule this year which has helped us reach a different part of the city with our programs.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching yoga class at Green Harbor Park?

Green Harbor Park is such a peaceful and serene location. This location offers a perfect grounding spot and gives class participants the opportunity to face the beautiful ocean water while practicing yoga.

What’s your favorite yoga pose and why?

Though I have many favorite poses in yoga, I really love doing the forward fold (or uttanasana). This pose challenges the lower body to center, balance, strengthen, and lengthen while offering release and relaxation of the spine, all at the same time.

What are your favorite hobbies to do outside of yoga?

When I am not teaching yoga, I enjoy discovering new places and savoring delicious food from different cultures. I also engage in other fitness activities such as teaching a Zumba Gold class at the New London Senior Center.
