At Yoga In Our City, we’re excited to shine a light on our incredible yoga teachers and the vibrant communities they serve. Get to know Nora, a dedicated yoga instructor with our City Parks Program, who brings her passion for inclusive and accessible yoga to the “fun, resilient and gritty” city of Willimantic, CT.
Nora’s Journey with Yoga and Willimantic
Nora’s connection to Willimantic runs deep. Growing up just 15 minutes away in Mansfield, she has always been a part of this community. For the past eight years, she has been sharing her love for yoga, not just as a practice but as a way to connect with others. When she’s not teaching, Nora captures the world through her lens as a photographer specializing in yoga photography—a unique blend of her passions.
Discovering Willimantic’s Hidden Gems
Nora loves the vibrant cultural scene in Willimantic. “People should know about the vibrant food, art, yoga, and retail scene here!” she says. Some of her favorite local spots include the open-air seating behind Grounded Coffee, perfect for meeting friends, and YONO, a fantastic yoga studio where several other Yoga In Our City teachers also teach.
For those who enjoy exploring local artistry, Nora recommends Swift Waters, an artist co-op store, and the Kerri Art Gallery. If you’re a fan of unique finds, Jewels Verne jewelry store is a must-visit. And for a taste of local flavor, the Willimantic Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and fine dining at Stone Row are not to be missed.
Yoga and Community: A Reflective Practice
Nora’s classes reflect the caring and supportive community she loves. Willimantic is home to many social service professionals, including social workers and caregivers, who often attend her classes. “It’s wonderful to be able to give back to workers from those types of jobs,” she shares, highlighting the reciprocal nature of her teaching.
A Perfect Day in Willimantic
For Nora, a perfect summer day in Willimantic involves spending time at Lauter Park, where she teaches Saturday morning classes. It’s a place of tranquility where she loves to relax by the gently flowing river, journal in hand.
Breaking Stereotypes About Willimantic
“People think of us as just another abandoned mill town,” says Nora. In reality, Willimantic is a thriving community rich in public art and culture. The city has seen an incredible public art campaign, filling the streets with murals, statues, and other beautiful works.
For a unique local flavor, she recommends Hosmer Mountain Soda, a family-owned soda company that uses spring water sourced right from Willimantic!
