Bridgeport, often called the “Park City,” is known for its expansive green spaces and vibrant community. It’s a city that’s always growing, with a rich history and a bright future. For Tonisha, a lifelong Bridgeport resident and yoga instructor with Yoga In Our City, these parks are the perfect setting for bringing wellness and healing to her community.
“Bridgeport has beautiful parks!” Tonisha shares. “On any given day, you’ll see residents enjoying the parks and partaking in healthy activities like bike riding, fishing, skating, walking, jogging, and now yoga.” These parks, once known primarily for recreation, have become hubs for healthy living and community connection, and Tonisha’s yoga classes are an integral part of that transformation.
A Lifelong Connection to Bridgeport
Tonisha has lived in Bridgeport her entire life and has been teaching yoga for the past four years. But her work in the community extends far beyond yoga. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Therapist, Tonisha provides support to individuals with chronic mental health diagnoses and those with a history of homelessness. In her role as Manager of Community Support Services at St. Vincent’s Medical Center/Hartford HealthCare Fairfield Region, she is deeply committed to helping those in need.
In addition to her full-time role, Tonisha runs a private practice offering therapy services to individuals and couples. She’s passionate about integrating holistic services like yoga into her therapy work to support people in healing from traumatic experiences.
Supporting Local Businesses in Bridgeport
Bridgeport’s diversity is reflected not just in its people, but also in its local businesses, and Tonisha is a proud supporter of her city’s food scene. Some of her favorite spots include Queen’s Delight, Veganish, Vazzy’s, and Thelma’s, which offer a mix of delicious, diverse dining experiences. These local gems help build the sense of community that makes Bridgeport special.
Reflecting Diversity in Yoga
The inclusivity of Bridgeport’s community is mirrored in Tonisha’s yoga classes. “The people who show up to my classes are diverse in age, race, and size,” she says, noting how this diversity highlights the city’s strength. Her classes are designed for everyone, regardless of their yoga experience, and she strives to make each session welcoming and accessible to all. This commitment to inclusivity is at the heart of what makes her yoga practice in Bridgeport so impactful.
Enjoying Bridgeport’s Outdoor Spaces
When Tonisha isn’t teaching yoga or supporting her clients, you can find her enjoying the outdoor beauty of Bridgeport’s parks. Two of her favorite spots are Seaside Park, with its stunning beach and boardwalk, and St. Mary’s by the Sea, a peaceful location perfect for relaxation and reflection. For Tonisha, these parks are more than just recreational spaces—they’re places where the community comes together to enjoy the city’s natural beauty.
Breaking the Stereotypes of Bridgeport
Tonisha is passionate about dispelling misconceptions about her hometown. “People think Bridgeport is dangerous and that the majority of people are poor and uneducated,” she says. But Bridgeport is so much more than these assumptions. With its museums, parks, pools, and community activities, it’s a thriving, diverse, and culturally rich city that’s always moving forward.
