Coming Home to a Vibrant Community in Hartford: Meet Yoga Teacher Kat

Hartford, Connecticut, known for its vibrant community and lush landscapes, has quickly become a cherished home for many, including our dedicated yoga instructor, Kat. Having lived in Connecticut for just a year after spending seven years overseas, Kat has embraced the city’s unique charm and the welcoming spirit of its residents.

A Cozy and Plentiful City

Kat describes Hartford as “cozy and plentiful,” capturing the essence of a city rich in greenery and community activities. “I appreciate how lush the area is and how many activities happen here! I also love that it is small enough that I often run into people I know, which really makes it feel like a community to me,” she shares. This sense of community is central to Hartford’s appeal, making it a perfect place for yoga and other communal activities.

From Yoga Studio to UConn Classroom

With a personal yoga practice spanning over three decades, Kat has been teaching yoga for about three years. Beyond the yoga mat, she serves as a professor at UConn, demonstrating her passion for teaching in various settings. “Teaching is just in my nature, and I love it!” Kat says, highlighting her commitment to educating and empowering others, both in academia and yoga.

Local Favorites: Diners and Green Spaces

Kat has a fondness for diners, with Quaker Diner and Wethersfield Diner topping her list of favorites. These cozy spots provide the perfect backdrop for community gatherings and casual meals. On a perfect summer day, you might find Kat walking along the Trout Brook trail or at Elizabeth Park, enjoying the outdoors with her headphones on, immersed in music.

The Heart of Yoga: Community and Compassion

For Kat, yoga is more than just physical postures; it’s about fostering a sense of union and community. “Yoga means union – union of mind, breath, and body, but also union/connection with others, seeing ourselves as part of the larger whole – yoga of community,” she explains. This philosophy is reflected in her classes, where she strives to create an inclusive and compassionate space for all participants.

Supporting Local: Hartford’s Hidden Gems

Kat encourages exploring Hartford’s local libraries, which she describes as amazing resources for the community. We’d have to agree: whether you’re checking out a book or joining an event, the Hartford Public Library has a wide range of resources and programming. (In fact, Yoga In Our City’s Happy Warrior yoga teacher training will be hosted by the Park Street Branch of the Hartford Public Library, kicking off in fall 2024!) You can join Kat in experiencing the vibrant community of Hartford by attending a no-cost, all levels City Parks yoga class in a park near you, every day of the week, through October 2024
