Waterbury, Connecticut, affectionately known as “The Brass City,” is a vibrant community with a rich history and a bright future. Our Yoga In Our City instructor, Abriella, has a deep connection to this city, not just through her yoga practice but also through her various roles in the community. Here’s a closer look at what makes Waterbury and Abriella’s yoga classes so special.

Embracing the Spirit of Waterbury

Abriella describes Waterbury as a diverse and centrally located city on the path to revitalization. Known for its iconic clock tower, Brass Mills Mall, Mattatuck Museum, Holy Land, Naugatuck River, and several theaters, Waterbury is rich in cultural and community resources. “Waterbury is more than just hospitals and a mall,” Abriella notes. “We have museums, parks, pools, delicious food, and fun community activities.”

A Journey with Yoga and Community Service

Abriella has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and started working in Waterbury in 2014 as a counselor. Her yoga journey has introduced her to the city in a new light. Outside of her yoga practice, she runs Abriella Reads LLC, where she serves as a Reiki Healer/Teacher, Tarot Reader, Spiritual Awakener/Mentor, and Medium. Additionally, she trains substance abuse counselors through the Certified Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counseling School (CADAC) at Connecticut Counseling Centers Inc., which has two locations in Waterbury.

Local Favorites and Community Gems

When she’s not teaching yoga, Abriella enjoys visiting local spots like Patio Bar and Café on Meadow Street, near Library Park, and Park Pizza on Cooke Street, close to Fulton Park. She also gives a special shoutout to Heart and Sole Dance Studio on Scott Road, praising their beautiful vision to teach dance to Waterbury residents and surrounding areas.

Reflecting Community in Yoga Practice

Abriella’s yoga classes are a microcosm of Waterbury’s diverse community. “People of all walks of life join me for yoga. It may be their first time or they are regular yogis,” she says. The inclusive nature of these classes, designed for everyone regardless of shape, size, or socio-economic background, is a reflection of the community spirit in Waterbury. “These classes are free for everyone,” Abriella adds, highlighting the accessibility of Yoga In Our City’s offerings.

Perfect Summer Days in Waterbury

On a perfect summer day, Abriella can be found teaching yoga at different parks around Waterbury. She leads classes at Library Park on Monday nights and at Fulton Park on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 PM. When she’s not teaching, she enjoys swimming, playing with her dogs, and soaking in the fresh air.

Dispelling Myths and Sharing Fun Facts

Abriella is keen to dispel the myth that Waterbury is just hospitals and a mall. The city offers much more, including a tight-knit community with a rich cultural scene. Did you know that Dylan McDermott, known for his roles in “American Horror Story” and “The Practice,” was born in Waterbury? Additionally, Ezra J. Warner, a Waterbury native, invented the first U.S. can opener on January 5, 1858.
